Information About Alejandro Mendoza
Alejandro (Alex) Mendoza was born in Riverside, California to a working-class Mexican couple, Alejandro Mendoza Sr. and Laura Mendoza. Inability to find and maintain consistent employment that paid a livable wage, forced the Mendoza family to return to Mexico in 1981. The Mendoza’s owned and operated a small grocery store in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico for several years. The Mendoza family emigrated from Mexicali and returned to California in 1986. Though the Mendoza family settled in California, the struggles of a working family continued which forced the family to move around constantly in search of a sustainable and stable job for both parents.
Mendoza recalls attending five different elementary schools, three different middle schools, and two different high schools. Alex’s parents both held a wide array of jobs; machine operator at a factory, worker at a food service factory, construction, maintenance, insurance sales, house cleaning, and others. Alejandro Mendoza Sr. currently works as a maintenance supervisor at an apartment complex and Laura Mendoza currently works as a commercial cleaner at a small airport in Arizona. Alex has two siblings; Nenetzin and Raul; Nenetzin is a nurse in California and Raul is a member of the Texas National Guard.
Alex graduated from Palm Springs High School 1995 while living in Cathedral City, California. It was in high school that Alex was first introduced to activism by a close friend, when in 1994 the State of California saw a ballot initiative (Proposition 187) that would establish a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibit illegal immigrants from using health care, public education, and other social services.
Mendoza enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during his junior year in High School, and shipped out to boot camp 10 short days after high school graduation. Alex served all four years of his service with the most decorated regiment in the Marine Corps, the 5th Marine Regiment. In 1998, Alex was assigned the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (IMEF) and served in Operation Native Fury while deployed to Kuwait. Honorably discharged in 1999, Alex began attending college at Riverside Community College in California.
While attending college, he also worked full-time for a mobile home and RV manufacturer in Riverside, CA. In 2000, a close friend, and fellow veteran of the Marines, encouraged him to relocate to Dallas, TX for a job opportunity. Upon arrival to Dallas, Alex was hired by a telecommunications company to work as an Information Technology (IT) analyst in an upcoming, global project. After several years in the IT field, he became an IT consultant and worked for many companies all over the world managing projects. He has worked in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, England, and Canada.
After many years of traveling all over the US and abroad, Alex decided to stop traveling and settle in Dallas, TX. He attended the University of Texas at Dallas to obtain a B.S. in Geology (with a minor in Environmental Geology). Mendoza worked for a large chemicals company where he met his wife, Louise. Louise came to Dallas from Ghana, West Africa, in 2000. Alex and Louise were married and had their first child, Zyanya in 2010.
Louise (also a University of Texas of Dallas graduate) and Alex both currently own and operate a local, sustainable lawn care company that uses renewable energy to charge and operate their lawn equipment. He continues to attend the University of Texas at Dallas part-time and is currently pursuing his Masters in Geology.
Alex has been an active member of the Socialist Party USA for many years and has been involved with local environmentally-conscious organizations throughout the North Texas area. Alex is currently serving as the State Chair for the Socialist Party of Texas, and is also an active member of the Socialist Party of Dallas/Ft. Worth local. He has been working to re-energize and organize the Socialist Party in Texas to ensure continued growth and for the party to become an active political player in the Texas political landscape.
On 15 October 2011, he was nominated for Vice President of the United States at the 2011 Socialist Party USA National Convention. Prior to being nominated, Alex planned to run for Texas State House in 2012.
